2000V DC fuses represent the latest technological frontier in utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The transition from the current 1500V DC standard to 2000V DC architectures meets the demand for higher energy density inside containers and drastically reduces copper usage in cabling.
Circuit protection at these extreme DC voltages is one of the most complex safety tasks in the entire facility.
Inside a BESS system, FaulTrap fuses are deployed through a layered and selective protection strategy:
- Battery Rack Protection (Rack Level): Each individual battery string or rack integrates dedicated fuses (typically 40A to 315A). They quickly isolate the rack during internal faults, preventing other modules from discharging their energy into it.
- DC Combiner & DC Bus Protection (Distribution Level): Located inside Combiner Boxes where the lines of multiple racks converge. These handle massive nominal currents.
- PCS Input Protection (Inverter Level): High-speed fuses placed at the input of the Power Conversion System (PCS). They protect the inverter from bidirectional fault currents originating from both the batteries and the grid.
